Nyungné is a Tibetan fasting practice focusing on Avalokiteshvara in his 1000-armed form. It serves to purify negative karma and develop compassion swiftly. The practice goes back to the nun Bhikṣuṇī Pelmo, who lived over a thousand years ago and was cured of her leprosy through the practice of Avalokiteshvara. This method is widespread in the Himalayan regions and is particularly suitable for practitioners who want to experience deep spiritual purification in a short period of time.
The practice involves fasting, with participants abstaining from eating, drinking and speaking. The best practice is not to eat not to drink and no to talk. However, if you need to drink for health reasons, this is also allowed. We will receive the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment from Drubpon Sangyas on Friday evening and will take the Sojong vows. At the same time, we will practice the Avalokiteshvara Sadhana, with recitation and visualization, meditation and prostration. While practicing this sadhana, we receive blessings that support the body, as well as insight into the wisdom and love of the embodiment of compassion, the deity Avalokiteshvara.
Nyungné helps to develop compassion for suffering beings and sensitises practitioners to their own patterns of greed and attachment. This practice promotes contentment, gratitude and mindfulness. Through the combination of fasting and meditation, a purification of body and mind is achieved, creating space for new, healing habits.
SOJONG:
Sojong is the act of renouncing 8 types of activities, from the time of the vows until the next morning. We promise to renounce the following:
1. Killing
2. Stealing
3. Sexual activities
4. Lying
5. Intoxication (alcohol, drugs)
6. Sitting high
7. Eating at inappropriate times
8. Singing and dancing or wearing jewelry and perfume.
“Not sitting high” means not sitting or sleeping in places associated with high social status, such as a throne in a temple. Using this could create a sense of pride in us. Using ordinary chairs is not a violation of this vow.
“Not eating at inappropriate times” means not eating and, in the best case, not drinking during our retreat from Saturday, 06:00 in the morning until Sunday, 10:30. This rule can be disregarded in cases of serious illness, when fasting could be life-threatening (e.g. diabetes), or when medication must be taken.
